Thanet Star

What is Thanet saying about the EU vote?

The big EU vote is just a few days away and local Social Media is talking about little else.

From the paranoid...

To the passionate...

To the downright odd...

Fear, one way or another, seems to be a recurring topic.

No supprise, then, that activists of all flavours are conjolling every last ounce of effort from their teams.

I even discovered a petition (not from thanet) to scrap the referendum.

Your Letters: Is Roger Gale doing too little for Manston?

George Cunningham writes to us expressing dissatisfaction with the governments slow response to the issue of Manston.

I am disappointed that, yet again, there is a further delay in resolving the Manston Airport issue. The government yesterday appointing a consultant to undertake a review of the process until now on decisions about the future of Manston Airport is just that. One has the impression that this is being deliberately spun out by the two main parties until after the general and district elections on 7th May.

Even if the Department of Transport announces at the last minute that it will support the CPO, there is no guarantee that the next government will honour it. Sir Roger Gale whispering in the ear of the prime minister and chancellor and getting encouraging noises in return, visits by Tory notables to the airport and TDC et al, are no substitute for the hard and fast resolution of this issue which seems always being evaded and delayed.

George Cunningham, Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for North Thanet.

Letters: Reforming the Bedroom Tax

Thanet Star recently received a letter from Lib-Dem George Cunningham.

Dear sirs,

With the so called bedroom tax affecting so many people here in the Thanet area, the good news is that the Liberal Democrats have taken the first step in reforming the bedroom tax by winning a crucial vote in Parliament.

Under the proposals, which were passed recently in the House of Commons, existing tenants will not be penalised when they cannot move into smaller accommodation because this is not available or where there is a serious medical reason for an additional room.

Our plans mean that any financial penalty would go to the housing provider rather than the individual claimant. The new system would incentivise social landlords to reduce the number of tenants under-occupying their homes, freeing up bigger properties for larger families.

These proposed changes to the policy have been welcomed by a number of organisations including Shelter, The Joseph Rowntree Foundation, Crisis, Oxfam and the Disability Benefits Consortium

However, Conservatives have stated publicly that they oppose reforms to bedroom tax and although Labour support the removal of the spare room subsidy, they have not indicated that they would also change the rules for the private sector.

George Cunningham

Liberal Democrat PPC for North Thanet

We at Thanet Star are pleased that George is taking this issue seriously. We recently received word that Sir Gale voted to keep the Bedroom Tax as it is at the moment - a deeply unfair and broken tax.

Well done Mr Cunningham.

Should we legalise Cannabis?

Should we legalise Cannabis to prevent the sale of more harmful "legal highs"?

Cannabis Joint

Given the news that Trading Standards are cracking down on the dangerous "legal highs" is it time to consider the less leathal yet non-legal alternatives?

Tell us what you think.

Remember to keep the debate interesting and enjoyable please attack the opinion and not the person. Thank you.
