Thanet Star - actively improving Thanet one idea at a time

Thanet's Top 100 Blogs

The top 100 is a project that aims to use already existing metrics to create a dynamic listing of the best, most read and most popular and interesting blogs in or about Thanet. Anyone can have their blog listed - simply email me on the same address as given on the advertise page and tell me your name, blog address (including the http and all "that") as well as the URL for your feed (if known).

While testing the system I will probably do a short write up on your blog.

More About Thanet Top Blogs

The Thanet top Blogs system will use Google PageRank, Alexa Rank, Compete Rank and Technorati's Rank, authority and links in metrics. Blogs on Blogger.com are going to suffer from the fact that there is no Compete or Alexa data for their specific blogs. This will give other bloggers a slight advantage.

The aim of the Thanet Top 100 is to profile and encourage the very best of what Thanet has to offer online. A form of "raising the bar" on quality and reporting in the local blogging scene. It is likely (but not guaranteed) that those that rank best will benefit from an enhanced standing in search engines as a result.

How Thanet Top Blogs Works

First the system takes the data for each metric and once complete it works out the average and standard deviation across all blogs. Each blog is then awarded a score which is a measure of it's location within the distribution. So a blog with an exact average will score 0 but a blog one standard deviation under would score -1 and a blog a standard deviation above will score +1. Your final score is the total of these numbers.

There is a small chance that the Thanet Top Blogs data may be binomial or significantly skewed in one direction or another. If this creates data that seems to distort the listing then I will write a more complex binomial or adjustive distribution analysis. As this is much more complicated I prefer to leave such things for the Thanet Blogs until after it is clear it is needed.

To reduce gaming I will be looking for additional metrics. The more metrics that are used the harder it will be to game them. Two things that will help your standing in the Thanet Top 100 are linking to other Thanet bloggers in your posts and being linked to by Thanet bloggers.

A third thing that may or may not help is linking to this page. For now I am not going to tell you if it makes any difference. I will say that the more metrics you rank well for then the better you will rank in the Top 100.
