Thanet Star - actively improving Thanet one idea at a time

Where Thanet Labour lost me.

Today I made a very important and long thought out decision and signed up as a member of a political party.

It’s not been easy to choose a party and I am not going to claim that everything about the party I have chosen makes me happy but at least for now I can live with my choice. This does, now, change my disclaimer that I have no party affiliation as clearly I now do.

For a while there back in 2009 I came close to joining the Thanet Labour Party. My reasons for considering joining were two fold. First Clive Hart had left me with the impression that he would happily support my standing for election for Dane Valley (something I have long felt I should do) and second I do not in all fairness feel I could join Thanet Conservatives.

My lack of desire to Join Thanet Conservatives has nothing to do with party policy and everything to do with the fact that any club with Sandy Ezekiel in, much less as leader of, was something I wanted nothing to do with.

The idea of patching things up with Dr Moores doesn’t bother me. Indeed most of our years long spat seems to me nothing more than mutually beneficial posturing.

So that left me with Labour as my only other choice. However I did not join due to lack of motivation and have now very much become glad that I did not.

The spat between Mark Nottingham and Clive Hart has hurt and offended me deeply. That a party could throw one of their best to the dogs just leaves me cold.

As political leaders and representatives this is simply not the way that we should be behaving. If a party will throw it’s own hard working members tot he curb what will they do with supporters and voters?

I even have leaked to me documentation that seems to show that Clive has not been entirely honest and that Mark seems to have a point. To be honest I’m not sure what sort of article to write around that topic.

You might have guessed that Clive Harts behaviour was the final straw for any support I had for Thanet Labour. Being already deeply offended by Thanet Conservatives I had little option but to side with the Thanet Liberal Democrat Party.

So I am now quite firmly with the Yellow Rosette wearing Lib-Dems. Just don’t get me started on the current government...

Would be great if you won a seat in the local council. I have fond childhood memories of Dane Valley. Thanet council needs a shake up. Go Matt Go!

Yes, you and Tony could stand on a dream ticket! But what are your local policies going to be with cash so tight? The Tories have raided the reserves this year and are already planning to use another £3.5 millions next year from the already small contingency.

Given all the facts about the wrangling between Clive Hart and his fellow Councillors, how can Labour now put themselves forward for election in May as a responsible local Political Party?
Good on you Matt, go for it,I see Dave
talks about a dream Team of you With Tony (Flaig ?) the real Dream team would be You, Tony and Bill Furness.
It would be great to see all three of you on the Council, anyway if you do stand Matt you will get my Vote.

I totally agree with you Matt, the Labour Party has definately seen better days and has made this country intolerable with their pandering to all. Now we have 2 generations who refuse to work because Labour gave so much to the benefit dependents. Also, How can anyone consider joining a Party when their support to other member is nil. This is totally disgraceful. Ezekiel is a disgrace to the Tory party and does more harm than good,he is vicious, vinditive and an absolute bully, as for his side kick Latchford well! say no more, just despicable.
If I decide choose to support any party in Thanet, it will be the Independents.
Has anyone seen the new contenders for the Labour Party,an ex teacher who has the reputation of motor mouth, another who can't speak the queens english and living on benefits and lastly a single mum with 3 kids. What chance have the Labour Party, when they get rid of a good educated Councillor in Northwood and replace him with 3 illiterates.

To answer some of your questions - it is no secret that I intend to put myself forward as a potential candidate for Dane Valley. However I am a realist and know that Liberal Democrats are unlikely to form a controlling factor of the council so my opinions on finacial investment are a bit limited to the world of what if. However should I find myself with a say ion the mater I would want to take a long hard look at the accounts before I say much else.

I can say that I am not impressed with the spending in Pierremont Park which I feel needs better scrutiny before it is given the final go-ahead. If we are commited to arts and culture spending I'd like to see some joined up planning and a decent business review of our cultural assests (caves, museums etc). If there is almost a million quid of section 106 cash to build offices then I'm thinking that piggy bank could be put to better use.

On more "minor" matters there are a number of things that I definitly can do for Dane Valley starting with being available to the people of Dane Valley.

Maybe that'll teach Labour a lesson. The Party could have had you with them but Clive's actions will have undoubtedly damaged them as you will now take a segment of their vote in Dane Valley Ward.

I am also running in Dane Valley Matt and I totally agree that candidates need to be there for residents. At the last election the Tories won all three seats, and since then one of them has moved to Panama and another has been found guilty of animal cruelty. The people of Dane Valley deserve better, and I wish you every piece of luck for the upcoming election if you choose to stand.

Also don't believe everything you hear about the local Labour party being lazy because I am out nearly every night talking to residents in Dane Valley and helping people with any problems they have. As for the Clive Mark spat, it is not for me to comment as its not my branch or even the constituency that I am running in!

My focus right now is on winning in Dane Valley and if elected I will work hard be a good representative for the next four years. If I lose to a candidate who will work for the people of Dane Valley, then fair enough that is democracy.

At the by election the LibDem candidate Bill Furness pushed the Tories down to third place,I believe the labour candidate came in front of him by only 50 votes or so.
You stand a very good chance Matt of winning as you are very well known in the area and have experience of the areas problems.
With the split in Labours camp this is not going down well here in our house.
Not one of our existing Councillors have done anything for us at all.
We need new Councillors here Matt, you will get our 3 votes.we voted Labour last time.

Will Scobie would get my second vote. But Sandra Hart (aka Mrs Clive Hart) can take a hike with what her husband has done to the local party. I am disappointed by his actions.

Not sure about the 3rd vote. Would rather not use it.

Patricia,
Don't be fooled by age/experience.
Will Scobie is a mature head on young shoulders. He understands politics because his father has been an excellent local councillor.
You could say Clive Hart is 'mature and aged' but he also appears to be rather corrupt and only in it for what he can get out of it. Same with his wife, Sandra, in your Ward.

I agree Patricia.
For Labour to have a chance in the coming elections, Clive Hart has got to be given his marching orders. Same for Alan Poole for his part in it. And not forgetting Kay Dark of course.
And if there aren't enough good and honest men/women in the party with the courage to stand up against Clive and his cronies, then sadly, they deserve what's coming to them on May 5th.

It was the right thing to do but
historically whistleblowers are not treated well. Organisations operate like 'packs' and turn against their own.

Quite agree with all of you, after this election there will be no Pooles, Harts, Darks or other worthless creatures, in the Labour Party.
After the decision was made on Friday,
at the Labour disaplinary meeting for Mark Nottingham, the decision was to resume the meeting two months time.
I really think it was planned so it wouldn't interfere with the elections, no such luck, they have cooked their goose.
I wish you good luck Matt, they now need new blood in all parties.

Sadly Charles, unless this disgraceful behaviour is exposed more widely the general population of Thanet won't be aware and Hart, Poole and Dark will smugly return for another 4 years. I too have had the email with all the evidence forwarded to me but don't have the skills to post it on the internet. I am passing it on to others though and the evidence is pretty overwhelming and all backed up.
