Things to do in Thanet when it's Wet
Enjoy gold medal winning hot chocolate. If you nip down to MMPLCS (the millmead Sure Start) you will find a fantastic cafe there. Sit yourself down order a hot chocolate and enjoy watching the Olympics on the big screen there. There are things for the little one's top do so bring them with you and get some breathing room for you all. I can highly recommend the baked potatoes or the special which always is special and so is the price - healthy, yummy and affordable food... I sound like an advert so on tot he next idea. Plus I have written about this location before.
Read Thanet's Blogs. Bit of a no-brainer of an answer this one. Check out Thanet Finder Blog Portal to view the latest posts by topic. Alternatively take a look at Thanet Blog List dot co dot uk for a list of local blogs.
Take in some history. I was talking to a cab driver who after working the job for ten years still did not know that there was a Margate Museum (confirming that I was not the only one not to know). If this is news to you perhaps it's time to find all those hidden heratige locations and visit them before TDC close them down. Here is a map.
Visit the Shell Grotto. I would not mind betting that lots of us that live in the area have never been. It's inside and out of the rain plus it's quite amazing. It's not so far from Margate Museum so you might like to visit both. [more]
Check out the RAF museum It's just £1 for adults and 50p for children so it's inexpensive if you have little ones. The museum is a great place to visit with lots of exiting exhibits to please any lover of aviation and I understand there is a cafe nearby (anyone able to fill us in a little here?) Visit the website for more.
Write to Thanet District Council. It might not do much good but you could always write to TDC and outline what you think is wrong with the area. You never know if enough of us did this they might get the message... well even the really unlikely might happen.
Start a blog. A blog is simply a cross between a diary that everyone reads and a grass roots single reporter newspaper. (actually there is no reason why you couldn't have many writers). Blogs can be about any subject you are interested enough to write about and can include pictures, video, audio (speaking or music) as well as text. The easiest to get started with is text and it need not cost you any money. Live in Thanet let's you run a single user blog while wordpress.com offers you more flexibility. ProBlogger.net have a more in depth guide.
Pub. Thanet has a large range of fine pubs and sadly a large range of really naff boozers. Many of the better establishments have pool table, darts or big screen TV so you can enjoy a slow pint and a little competitive fun.
Get wet. Your being rained on anyway so why not nip along to one of our many swimming pools and have a bit of a splash. It's good for you and fun especially if you can end with a hot shower and some light refreshments.
Let the kiddies play. While not as all ages friendly as say, the Sure start community cafe in millmead the Ramsgate based Play Bay caters for 0-8 year olds and is inside. I must admit I know only what I was able to find from the website which is frankly a bit weak (I offer a competitive rate for a business focused make over). You'll need £3.00 for those little ones under 4 and £3.50 for the over 4 darlings.
Read a book admittedly this takes planning and preparation (you need a book to read first) so pop along to Michael's Bookshop in Ramsgate and pick up some fine books on local history or something more "main stream". Now that's what I call putting something aside for a rainy day the trouble is the amount I love to read even massive books take no more than a couple of days to read cover to cover. here's a map.
Take in a show. Depending on the time of day and what's on you might like to consider getting over to the, now Grade II listed, Winter Gardens for some song and dance. There is often something going on down there and you might as well enjoy what we have to offer our visitors.
Eat out in style for less. If you love to eat out but have a budget then I suggest Cosmo Chinese Restaurant at just £5 a head for the lunch buffet you can relax take your time and eat as much as you like. I've reviewed the establishment already (see link) so I shall not harp on about it.
My point, I think, is that there is actually quite a lot to do - if you have a little cash and the ability to get about the area. I recomend getting a day rider ticket from Stagecoach and riding the buses where-ever you need to go. You may also wish to read: An Alternatives Guide to Thanet.
