Thanet District Censorship

Tony reports that Thanet District Council have been censoring bloggers from reporting on "public" meetings.

Censorship
Tony who writes the blog "Big News Margate" regularly reports from cabinet meetings. However this Thursday he wrote tonight I was told that I could not write or report on the cabinet meeting.

Having no reason to doubt what Tony has said I would like to enquire from our so called leaders under what law do they claim the right to suppress freedom of speech and more importantly the freedom of the independent press?

As an independent I am already banned from using the press office of our Council and must file Freedom of Information requests which can take an age when our Council wish to suppress information or are feeling especially sheepish about the facts.

The incumbent party hardly has the margin to risk offending the public. I suggest the leader of the council personally get his backside tot he nearest internet enabled device and explain himself forthwith.

Well I can hope right?

If what you have reported Tony as saying is true, how come James Maskell of Ville View blog was able to take notes and publish them on his blog? You need to check but the issue was one of being able to use a mobile phone in a council meeting. Tony made a song and dance that it was the Labour administration out to get him but I think you will find that the position of using of mobiles in council meetings has not changed since they were invented. Its not just TDC that dont allow them, councils of all colours across the land ban them from meetings.
But I dont think at this point in time TDC should spend any counillor and officers time ie our cash on drafting and then creating new standing orders when the existing pen and paper method can do a adequate job as James has demonstrated.

When phones and personal computers are ubiquitous to insist that only old technology is good enough makes us sound outdated and foolish.

There is a known bug with the Thanet Directory where the category links are not working. This is a fault with the URL parser / builder which doesn't cope well with custom language keys. I did not write it and I am working on a replacement. Everything else should be fully operational.
I've been adding new items to the Directory of Everything in Thanet. Keep the reviews and votes coming in and I'll keep adding items. Message me if you want something added that's not already there.
I've been working on this for a while and now here it is The Thanet Directory. It's a work in progress that you can add to.
