Thanet Blog Rank - The Theory

This post is one in which I will be showing my more technical side. I am going to be focusing on a topic I raised a little while ago - the ecology of blogging in Thanet. In part this is inspired by the sterling work carried out by the Thanet Blog List in compiling a list of Thanet bloggers and blogs.
In modern search technology the nature of hyper media and its unformed link structure have formed a basis for understanding the relationship documents. What this means is that pages that are connected in topic are often linked to similar or the same sources. At the centre of all that are the most linked to pages. This pages are probably the most significant.
There are several big analytical and search companies that use metrics such as these. Google and Technorati are two of them. Each applies the numbering in a different way and the numbers often mean something different.
However, relative to themselves these figures provide a great deal of information as to the value, traffic and overall standing of any given site. In theory, then, it should be possible to create a list of Thanet blogs and using these metrics through a balancing formula (to give greater credence to stronger indicators) one should be able to create a fairly substantial listing of blogs. The product of this being a top 100 listing updated each cycle.
This is good because it allows a little friendly competition (the life blood of commerce) and gives a measure of recognition to those that lead the field. I will be working on this system over the next few months and rolling out regular updates. The top 10 will enjoy additional attention in the form of editorial review and a professional assessment.
To be considered your blog simply needs to be a Thanet blog. By this I am going to say a blog that is written by a person in Thanet (as for example testified to by a listing in the Thanet Blog List). I think I will make further specifications creating the following categories:
Open: Blogs by people from Thanet
Focused: Blogs about Thanet (or some part thereof) or with a strong Thanet flavour
To be listed you simply need to be discoverable (a listing in the aforementioned list would be a good place to start). Commenting here and on other blogs you consider to be representative of Thanet blogging might be one way. Being linked to for your quality content would be another good way.
Once the system is up and running I will allow people to submit blogs to the list directly but to start with I will use the Thanet Blog List to auto discover blogs. If you have any thoughts on this system (technical or otherwise) or any particular metric you would like me to consider then feel free to share your opinion as always in the comments section.
