The Thanet Star

Random Acts of Kindess

If you did not happen to be blinking when it slipped into the news briefly you might recall that a brave young man has decided to walk from the UK to India using no money at all. Just for the love of it (dot org) pilgrim Saoirse is a man with a mission. A mission to perpetrate random acts of kindness on the world.

He is also coming to Thanet. I know this because I took the time to catch up with him over a few emails recently and suggested that he pass through. You can read his blog here which details some of the things he has been up to as he tours the UK on foot foregoing our financial system as he does so.

Recently the National (British) media got hold of the story and by all accounts were about as accurate in their reporting as our local lot. Saoirse writes: "...if they are so inaccurate and irresponsible with a small story like this, how much more so with the really big news! Is anything in the papers or on the news really true?" (Post entitled: Paper accepts all ink...).

It sounds like we are not the only one's dealing with a old style media unable to get anywhere near the facts. As "Big News Margate" says in the all caps entitled "WHY THANET NEEDS LOCAL BLOGGERS" "...being cynical I question, and journalists don't appear to" - we bloggers need to keep them honest!

This is where numbers start to count. The more bloggers the bigger the voice... sort of but the rest is technical and you can be sure that there will be technical people ready to aggregate that voice into a tool. even if this does not happen the pressure of hundreds (or even tens) or people saying "hang on a moment" is an embarrassment to the established voices.

They are not going anywhere but we are here to stay too.

Mean while Saoirse and Eric (The Fun Revolution (dot com)) are approaching Thanet and I propose that we bloggers welcome him in a big way. I intend to meet up with him and spend a day or so doing acts of kindness for whoever needs them. No one knows the exact time or date but that's part of the "fun".

You can read what Mike Fairclough the Headteacher from West Rise Junior School had to say after he invited them to talk to the children by visiting this page and having a look at the comments. You will also see critical and downright cynically nasty feedback from the critical nay saying crew (yes they exist outside of Thanet too). Enough nastiness to send a whole fleet of lesser men (looking at no well known locals) running for the hills but these guys are not going to be put off.

So while a few stuck up right wingers moan and mutter about how the other half are all scroungers, we real live human beings are going to get on with this thing called . I invite you all to join in - bring yourself, bring things that need doing or just bring a camera and take photo's of the others (then blog about it).

See you then.

-Matt
