Thanet Star - actively improving Thanet one idea at a time

Local Reaction to...

I feel it would be a service to the wider public and to people from outside of Thanet to document the general opinion of "us lot in Thanet" on a number of key subjects. For this reason I will be looking for blog posts from notable and/or articulate bloggers as well as additional sources. Hopefully I will be able to create an overview of the "pro" and "anti" feelings in the area.

I will then create an article on the subject pointing readers to the posts I have identified and attempting to score the balance of opinion to gage favour or disfavour. Almost 50% of you will disagree with my conclusion and that's good and natural and a great reason for you to put forth a good argument as to a different conclusion on your blog or in the comments section of the post.

(I will also look at videos especially those with a textual transcript.)

I hope to be looking at the following subjects:

  • The Turner Centre
  • Westwood Cross
  • The recent behaviour of Sandy Ezekiel
  • Margate Harbour Arm
  • The China Gateway
  • The Scenic Railway

I will particularly favour posts that do any of the following things (the more the merrier):

  • Explain the reasoning behind your opinion
  • Cite sources such as newspaper articles or other paper (off line) publications
  • Link to sources
  • Keep the offensive language minimal
  • Make me understand your position even if I disagree
  • Contain well articulated opinions from commenters (especially named as opposed to anon)

I will be using any images that are representative of the debate so long as (a) I can find permission to download the image or (b) the image is on flickr or some other image share server with a set of permissions that allows me to display it.

I'd like to get cracking on the Westwood Cross one fairly soon but after that I think I'll work with whatever has the most material available when I am ready to start. The sooner the better really but don't rush to much - I'm happy to hang fire for a few days if you are working on something but don't feel it is ready just this second.

View by site message (just click my name) or added after the post has been made should both be fine too although I'd like to be able to indicate other sites and blogs that have expressed an opinion.

I don't always spot stuff in the papers (time is in short supply in my house) so feel free to educate me as to where and when an article appeared on the subject.
