Thanet Star - actively improving Thanet one idea at a time

Fix my (dangerous) street

It's time to fix this problem before it kills someone.

Residents of Dane Valley have started to speak up regarding a dangerous junction that has come close to claiming the lives of a number of people.

We are calling for a mirror so positioned that someone coming out of Tenterden Way can actually see what is coming up the road before making a right hand turn. Rather than, as at present, make the right hand turn blindly and guessing you are not crossing in front of oncoming traffic.

You can sign the petition on the Kent County Council Website.

What happened to my mum's car

While I say "started" it's more like have renewed calls for KCC to sort it out. Back in July 2010 Rosemary (that's my mum) put a request on Fix My Street to see change after she and my sisters almost met their end at a known problem junction.

This request was promptly ignored.

This time, owever, it will not be ignored. When 1000 people sign the petition it will be debated by a full meeting of the council. Hard to ignore then, eh.

Sign the petition on the KCC Website.

Fixed and improved.

Along with the improvements to the road surfaces that I triggered I can also happily report that a certain road sign has also been repaired.

Now if I can get some attention to the rather deadly corner as well I shall be most pleased.

Deadly roads

Late last year a car crash almost cost the life of my sister's (then) unborn baby. The damage might not look the most dramatic you've ever seen but the car was scap metal and my sister taken into hospital. My mum and another of my sisters were left badly shaken up but otherwise safe.

The cause of this crash?

The junction of Tenterden Way and Millmead Road. It is frankly one of the worst palces to try to manage a right hand turn from as by the time you can see on coming traffic to your right you are fully committed to the turn.

I am currently attempting to get the corner made safe before someone is killed.

What happened to my mum's car

Yes the wheel is bent at a funny angle. No the car could not be driven.

This wheel is broken

Roads

When I complained to KCC about the potholes in the roads near to where I live I expected that they would send someone out to fill them (which they did most promptly). What I didn't expect is that they would come back and reserfice all the roads.

I think we can call that one an added success.

Tenterden Way

Tenterden Way Sign - damaged

Yet another appalingly maintained road sign from the Millmead Area (part of Dane Valley ward). Fortunatly getting the six or seven chronic potholes fixed that were just spitting distance from this sign was required a lot less fuss.

Hours delay on buses.

Delays of up to an hour are being experince by Thanet's bus users today.

This is due, apparently, to an accident somewhere on Thanet's roads on the main bus route between Ramsgate and Margate. I don't currently have any further details but here is to hopeing that no one was hurt.

Thanet Light Rapid Transit

Could Thanet one day have a light rail network?

Imaging jumping on a train\tram to do the days shopping with stops at Westwood Cross for "fashion", Ramsgate for Books and History and Margate for a pub lunch and a donkey ride. It all sounds a bit far fetched but it's not totally beyond possible.

The Thanet Light Rapid Transit enthusiasts have already began pressing KCC and national transport ministers to make it a reality: Thanet is possibly the most underrated part of Britain. Says Richard Jalabhay, The airport needs a direct rail link, congestion at Westwood needs to be relieved and the entire economy of Thanet needs a new driver.

That's a hard line to argue with. Keep reading to find out some more of the advantages of such a scheme and how it might be implemented.

Dane Valley Road Sign

Not so very long ago I found myself in Dane Valley. This is not unusual as I am often to be found within the building ( as it was). I happened to have my phone with me and notice the dire state of the street sign I was passing along .

Dane valley road sign

As you can see the sign plate is quite new but the supports to which it has been attached do not have long left in this world.

Dane Valley Road Sign
As you can see the level of decay is quite high.

The support is rusted through and holes have appeared rendering it somewhat dangerous e and definitely unsightly. Surely this was spotted and reported when the new sign face was put up?

No? You do surprise me... (!)

Here is a better shot of the "damage" that time and rain (and no coat of wetherproofing) have brought about.

Is this a one off? Have you seen worse examples of decay and neglect around Thanet? Send them in to Matthew at Thanet Star dot com. These things can only go unfixed if they also go unmentioned.

TDC refuse to repair Broadly Road

Thanet District Council have refused to remove dangerous rubble from the middle of a road widely used by school children travelling from and to Dane Valley. According to TDC Broadly Road is not their responsibility and so no action will be taken.

Broadly Road is an "unmade road" that connects Dane Valley with the A255. This means that the quality of the road is far below the usual standard of neglect for roads in Thanet being, in places, little more than a network of potholes. The use of this road, while not for everyone, reduces journey time significantly for journeys between. (see the map below). To most this public right of way is simply known as "the track".

There is a known bug with the Thanet Directory where the category links are not working. This is a fault with the URL parser / builder which doesn't cope well with custom language keys. I did not write it and I am working on a replacement. Everything else should be fully operational.
I've been adding new items to the Directory of Everything in Thanet. Keep the reviews and votes coming in and I'll keep adding items. Message me if you want something added that's not already there.
I've been working on this for a while and now here it is The Thanet Directory. It's a work in progress that you can add to.
