Arlington Square: Your views

Now that the planning decision for Arlington Square and Arlington House has been passed to central government there is little to do but sit back and wait to see what they say.

While we wait to find out if we will have a Tesco there now is a good time to throw open the floor to see what you think. This link is to a detailed alternative. Is having a Tesco there a good thing? Will it work or will it go horribly wrong?

A plan for Arlington « Margate Conservation Area Advisory Group

Russell Diplock’s 1960s vision for Arlington Square united beach, cars, shopping and living to create a civic space with pride and optimism. There were some negative aspects which need to be put right and the space has been treated badly.

I don't believe the link is a VIABLE alternative. (1) Who'll pay for this? (2) Has any businesses even AGREED to be part of this, let alone able to make a success of a cafe culture in the shadow of a tower block (fine in London, not so fine when there's a beach, harbour & quaint old town within easy walking distance).

According to the Gazette, it's been estimated that Tesco will bring back 30% of local people who currently shop at Westwood Croos, but at a cost of 10% of customers who currently use local businesses. This seems an acceptable pay-off to me, particularly as other businesses (cafes, pubs, hairdressers, etc) are likely to actually benefit. Bring it on!!! : )

I guess the question is can we afford to loose 10% more of the local shop users? Obviously Peter thinks yes while I am undecided. Something to counter balance and increase the local shop footfall would be good although how that might work I have yet to think about.
