Ukip's Dane Valley councillor charged with threatening behaviour

Dane Valley deserves a break. Instead it got an (alegedly) abusive UKIP councillor who lives in London.

At least that's the story according to the Christmas Eve Thanet Gazette Story: Ukip councillor charged with threatening behaviour.

Cllr Gary Hillman, who represents Dane Valley Ward, has been charged with "using threatening, abusive or insulting words with intent", after an disturbance at the Winter Gardens in September.

Cllr Gary Hillman has been made a reserve on the planning committee and sits on the governance and audit and general purposes panels. Maybe UKIP think that living over an hour away from Thanet gives Hillman a special insight into the needs of Dane Valley and Millmead? That, or they have no idea what they are doing.

Would you vote for the likes of Hillman?

Honestly, would a polite email have really hurt you that badly?

Happy Etc..

Christmas, for me, is not a happy time.

Generally I try to avoid making everyone else miserable but Christmas is a time that has generally brought pain, misery and reasons to be full of anything but good cheer.

Even so...

I wish happiness and good health to all our readers this season of traditional good cheer.

Have a good one, stay safe. Be nice to each other.

Election to take place in January 2016

There is to be an election in Newington on 21st January.

We've been asking since October when it was going to happen but the election date has now been set.

The election was triggered by the departure of UKIP's Cllr Munday (just one in a long line of UKIP defections).

According to Thanet District Council's website the election will probably be held on the 21st January 2016.

Rumour has it that all the regular parties have or are selecting candidates to stand in the ward. The exception being that we have yet to find out of the Conservatives will be standing anyone. UKIP have had a candidate on stand by for a while in the hope that they can keep the seat to avoid shrinking their minority control of the council still further.

More news as we have it.

Royal School for Deaf closes

The John Townsend Trust has announced it is to close the Royal School for Deaf Children and Westgate College.

Those of you that have been following the news would be aware that there was some question of the future of the trust. Thanet Gazette announced the closure today with the lost of over two hundred jobs.

As I work closely with an unspecified number of people who have worked there or continue to work there I have known this was a possibility for a while, although I honestly hoped that it might not come to this. I had decided to not say anything so as not to disrupt an already delicate situation.

I feel sad for friends who find themselves out of work after investing so much effort there. I can only imagine how the senior management team must feel.

Thanet Star's writers will talk more about the closure once the dust has had a little time to settle.

Is Thanet's water killing us?

Bad Dreams

Gut infesting parasites and nasty toxins - is Thanet a statistical blip or is there really something in the water?

According to the evidence, there is reason to think that the drinking water in Thanet could make you sick. After all, say experts, it has before.

According to one publication, (Safe Drinking Water: Lessons from Recent Outbreaks in Affluent Nations by water experts, Steve E. Hrudey and Elizabeth J. Hrudey), in December 1990 and January 1991 there were 47 laboratory-confirmed cases of cryptosporidiosis (a parasitic infection) that were associated with the Thanet water supply.

Michael Child of Ramsgate, claimed on his blog (in 2009) that the Richborough refuse landfill may be seeking things you'd rather not drink into the local drinking water.
