Are TDC about to back out of Manston?

Have TDC have rolled over for big business and house building at Manston?

Manston Airport

Not even twenty-four hours after Thanet Star asked if there was a u-turn in Labour policy on Manston news has emerged of a u-turn on Labour policy on Manston.

Iris Johnson the Labour leader of TDC has suggested in an ITV interview that she might not CPO against the new owners if they can produce jobs for Thanet in sufficient numbers.

However Kent News reports that the Manston CPO is still underway. Furthermore the TDC website suggests that the CPO study is still under way, at least for now.

So is Ms Johnson telling us that TDC are just going through the motions to keep the peace with this CPO?

Will Manston now become houses and a shopping mall if TDC roll over?

Two days ago Manston Airport was sold to housing developers and it looks like TDC are actually considering letting them build.

The buyers are Trevor Cartner and Chris Musgrave. These are (some of) the gentlemen behind the Discovery Park deal at the Pfizer site in Sandwich. However Ms Gloag is not entirely out of the picture having sold them only a majority stake.

In reaction to the announcement of the sale Thanet's Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidates George Cunningham and Russ Timpson said that the news should not deter Thanet District Council pressing ahead with the CPO process.

The local Chamber of Commerce has prepared a carefully-costed business plan which shows Manston can be made viable again. A move which has wide ranging public support but less political will to make it happen.

The nature of the "sale" means that if house building goes ahead Ms Gloag still gets her payday but that now she has less risk and stronger allies. Something that might be giving Thanet District Council second thoughts over the Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) of Manston.

Indeed these new owners have said the airport has closed, the equipment has been sold and it will not reopen. Something that many in Thanet feel is an unacceptable attitude that amounts to sticking your tongue out, thumbing your nose and saying "ner-ner, we've got the airport and there's nothing that you can do."

Thanet Finder Adds Image Search

Thanet Finder, Thanet's first and only dedicated search engine, has been updated to include image search.

Thanet Finder was started as a community project in 2008. Since then the core group of maintainers (which often includes Thanet Star's Matt B) have been working hard to keep us connected to everything related to Thanet.

Thanet Finder leverages the power of Google and recently the search giant has released tools that have allowed Thanet's search engine to return a dedicated Thanet image search.

The new search option is still very new but we are all hopeful that this will be an enhancement that will prove useful to people.

Take the newly improved Thanet Finder for a spin.

Letters: Reforming the Bedroom Tax

Thanet Star recently received a letter from Lib-Dem George Cunningham.

Dear sirs,

With the so called bedroom tax affecting so many people here in the Thanet area, the good news is that the Liberal Democrats have taken the first step in reforming the bedroom tax by winning a crucial vote in Parliament.

Under the proposals, which were passed recently in the House of Commons, existing tenants will not be penalised when they cannot move into smaller accommodation because this is not available or where there is a serious medical reason for an additional room.

Our plans mean that any financial penalty would go to the housing provider rather than the individual claimant. The new system would incentivise social landlords to reduce the number of tenants under-occupying their homes, freeing up bigger properties for larger families.

These proposed changes to the policy have been welcomed by a number of organisations including Shelter, The Joseph Rowntree Foundation, Crisis, Oxfam and the Disability Benefits Consortium

However, Conservatives have stated publicly that they oppose reforms to bedroom tax and although Labour support the removal of the spare room subsidy, they have not indicated that they would also change the rules for the private sector.

George Cunningham

Liberal Democrat PPC for North Thanet

We at Thanet Star are pleased that George is taking this issue seriously. We recently received word that Sir Gale voted to keep the Bedroom Tax as it is at the moment - a deeply unfair and broken tax.

Well done Mr Cunningham.

What could the Lib Dems do for Ramsgate?

Russ Timpson talks about his connection to Thanet and his vision for its future.

Short version:

  • Pro getting something done with Pleasurama (and disappointed that the local council have taken so long over it)
  • Pro Manston as a fright and ancillary service centre
  • Pro jobs
  • Claims a degree of being local to the area
  • Feels Ramsgate should and could be a prime tourist hotspot

I don't know about you but I like what he has to say.

Did you talk to The Guardian?

Apparently The Guardian was in Broadstairs talking to people about the upcoming election next year.

Sadly my health did not allow me to go and join in with talking to the report(s) but I am hoping that some of our readers did. Perhaps you even managed to snap a few pictures?

Short outage

We experienced something of an outage last night. It looks like the server could not cope with the load during a normal low usage time. This suggests that it was a Denial of Service Attack on the server. Hopefully that is because we are making waves by speaking up and not just because some spammer let their bots run wild.
