Goodbye Westwood Cross Roundabout?

Now that they've built you a new road they plan to pedestrianise?

According to plans published by Kent County Council the Authority plans to remove a heavily used roundabout and padestrianise part of Margate Road.

Traffic will have to divert via Poorhole Lane unless it's a bus or a taxi.

Other plans include acquiring the road owned by Tesco and making it an official part of Thanet's roadway.

Electronic Cigarette shop to open in Broadstairs

Broadstairs will be seeing Kent's Broadstairs' first Vape Coffee Shop open for users of electronic cigarettes.

I caught up with Sean Donnellan, the proprietor of Vape Elite for the inside scoop.

Donnellan explained just what vaping is and why it is better for you. There's a lot of people that would rather slate it because of bad press, he told me. I'm all for educating people because it's a much more healthy option for smoking.

When you smoke a regular cigarette you inhale over 3900 harmful toxins as does everyone arround you. With vaping, on the other hand, you are at least 90% safer and no longer putting others at risk.

But is it as safe as people claim? Keep reading for the full story.

Manston's Taiwanese Hope

A delegation of Taiwanese investors should have visited Manston airport this afternoon thanks to the Lib-Dems.

According to the Thanet Gazette envoys from the Taipei Representative Office in the UK have been invited to the airport today by Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary Candidate (PPC) for Thanet North George Cunningham.

Cunningham (Thanet North) along with Russ Timpson (Lib-dem PPC for Thanet South) have been adiment that not only can Manston be saved that it can be run profitably. An opinion that, we understand, the Thanet and East Kent Chamber of Commerce agrees with.

Is the Gazette too biased?

Is it just me or does the local press have a political agenda?

If there is one thing that you cannot accuse the Thanet Gazette of being it's unbiased. Take, for example, the ongoing news of candidates selected to stand for Thanet South. You could be forgiven for thinking that only the right have managed to stand anyone.

Should we legalise Cannabis?

Should we legalise Cannabis to prevent the sale of more harmful "legal highs"?

Cannabis Joint

Given the news that Trading Standards are cracking down on the dangerous "legal highs" is it time to consider the less leathal yet non-legal alternatives?

How clean is your street?

According to the local news we've been losing street cleaners year on year.

A recent Thanet Gazette article claims that Thanet's street cleaners have been cut by a third in the last 4 years.

Rubbish: A growing problem

The argument from the local council is that they simply do not have the money to pay as many cleaners as they did back in 2011.

Is this simply a case of the practical impact of Tory led cuts in central government or poor administration locally?

Margate Green Grocer Relaunches

Thanet Star became aware of the re-opening of Margate's green grocer and our People's Interest contributor, Illisia Adams, visited for a look at the shop, and an Interview with the proprietor.

Shop Front Margate Green Grocer

Number 107 on Margate High Street has opened its doors to customers again! It re-opened one month ago today, on June 04th.

Khamis Ali, an Egyptian-born gentleman who moved to the UK back in 2001 is the shop proprietor. When I was intrigued about his foreign routes, given the rising concern in how many immigrants that there are in our area, he proudly told me that he moved to our country to find work here and that he has never lived off of Benefits. He has “always wanted to be [his] own boss”.

Khamis speaks several languages; his home-tongue Egyptian, English (very well!) and Polish, which his wife taught him. He is a very hard worker who actually owns another green grocer in Chatham and travels fourty miles to get here every day from his home and he has as little as seven hours sleep in a week.

Why the expansion to Margate, then? Why not! Khamis has had his eye on the store here since before it closed down two years ago. He has huge confidence in its potential, signing a lease to rent the shop for five years.

The TESCO fight goes on and on

It looks like Louise Oldfield's campaign against another TESCO still has legs.

Oldfield has successfully argued that the overall impact of building a TESCO on the sewer system was not fully considered. She has been granted the right to appeal an earlier decision to uphold the planning permission for building a TESCO at the Arlington site.
