Thanet's EU results are a massive "screw you" to politics

The results are in and the winner was no one at all.

Not only because the EU vote does not exactly have winners but also because the vast majority of people voted to let the politicians do whatever the hell they wanted by staying home and keeping out of it.

EU vote for MEP, Thanet, 2014

Admittedly the turnout was higher than expected although not by much and this can entirely be accounted for by the swollen numbers the Eurosceptic parties got for their European candidates. Perhaps because Eurosceptic voters did not understand that this was not a vote about Europe but simply voting was in support of Europe.

However if that is all the support UKIP can manage during a vote where pretty much everyone else is fairly apathetic about the outcome and only hardcore voters bother to show up I think it is safe to say that when the serious voting starts next year for positions that can actually change British policy on the EU that they are on a road to nowhere.

Thanet is not Boris Island says Johnson

According to Boris Johnson Thanet is too far away.

Johnson, with a background in something-other-than-airports, said in a tweet: we looked at Manston but decided it was just too far and wouldn't produce the regeneration...but good runway!!

The staggering truth about Gloag's Manston deal

Lufty Jumbo Jet

Have we been the victims of fraud and misdirection over Manston?

Based on research that we have been carrying out here at Thanet Star it really does look like the idea was to force the council to buy the airport all along.

What we have uncovered is only a pattern of behaviour between two very powerful companies but one that is so striking it is hard to ignore. The evidence suggests that maybe Manston Airport was part of a debt swap and dump and it might not be the first time that these companies have been part of such an action.

Manston Airport

In 1998 the existing owner sold Prestwick Airport to our favourate Scottish transportion company - Stagecoach Group [source]. Stagecoach then went on to sell the airport to Infratil in 2001 [source].

The same Infratil owned Manston Airport and then sold it to the Stagecoach Group's owner Ann Gloag in almost the exact same way last year.

But the uncanny similarities do not stop there.

When Infratil owned Manston airport it loaded it with debts and handed off to Gloag's company. Likewise when Gloag's Stagecoach Group owned Prestwick Airport it too was loaded up with debt before sale.

Prestwick was taken off of Infratil's hands by the Scottish Government who renationalised the airport and presumably took care of the debt.

Now it looks like our local authority will end up taking the airport off of Gloag's hands and take care of that debt too.

Is this less a case of Gloag's revenge and more the second half of a complex conspiricy to squeeze free cash from government?

Gloag's Revenge?

Is Ann Gloag, perhaps, exacting her revenge on the people of Thanet by raising bus fares?

The prices of Stagecoach bus tickets has gone up again despite relatively stable fuel and insurance prices of late. This increase is well above the rate of inflation and follows closely on the closure of Manston and the bankrupting of another bus rival.

Ann Gloag made her fortune with Stagecoach and then brought Manston airport for a pound and turned down Seven Million times what she paid for it. She did that because some people in KCC and TDC might have given her the impression that she would be given the freedom to build houses there which would be worth a lot, lot more (to her, not us).

Having lied to us (whether deliberately or retrospectively by changing her mind) about intending to run the airport for several years questions are also being asked regarding the cosy relationship her bus service has with the local council. For example how can we trust Gloag's company to deliver fair value for money with her buses?

The Viking Gallery Opening: South London Goes To The Seaside

South London Goes To The Seaside

This weekend is an important one for Margate, and more specifically Cliftonville High Street, as a new art gallery - The Viking Gallery - opens and brings some much needed colour and life into the area.

There are other art galleries in Margate. Art is a large part of the culture here, given how historical painter William Turner called the Thanet skylines the loveliest in all of Europe, but what makes this particular gallery so unique is its origin story; how it came to life.

Is This Even Legal? Thanet Council Names-And-Shames Local Resident After Complaint Is Filed

Thanet Star prides ourselves on being The Voice Of The People. We know that this news post will not necessarily meet with positivity with the Council, but we also know that it is absolutely essential that the people of Thanet are aware that their complaints are not being kept confidential.

Yes, you read me correctly. It has come to the attention of Thanet Star, with publicly available evidence to support the claim, that Thanet District Council are including the names of residents who are writing to them with complaints in related communications to their Councillors, and furthermore, that one such resident has had herself publicly named-and-shamed by a Councillor whom she had complained about.

This is completely unacceptable, and honestly, we at Thanet Star are concerned that it might not even be legal.

TDC needs "Fresh Blood" say Lib-Dems

The Liberal Democrats are calling for fresh blood to get Thanet out of the mess that it is in.

Does Thanet need the EU?

I talk to North Thanet Lib-Dem candidate George Cunningham about the EU. What he said surprised me.

After I quizzed Cunningham about Manston I talked to him about the upcoming EU elections.

From the video:

  • Polish immigrants cost us only 75% of what they pay in taxes (a net gain)
  • Polish workers have been leaving the UK because Poland is doing that much better for being in the EU
  • We have a shortage of ICT skills to fill jobs in the UK
  • The EU was something that the UK founded
  • If the UK left the EU could do things that are against our interests and we could do nothing about it
  • Ireland attracts companies by being in the Eurozone and may have taken jobs with it.
  • 400,000 Jobs in Kent are related to being in the EU
  • 2m Brits (about 3% of the population) live on the continent
  • Open Borders with other EU countries has led to more crimes being solved

Some more interesting facts about the EU.

  • The amount we spend to be in the EU amounts to 19p in every 100 of tax
  • UK Businesses gain more in trade in a month than we spend in a year
  • France, Italy and Greece effectively subsidise our membership
  • If we could get EU dentists into Thanet we could solve the dentist shortage in the area

Manston: What Next?

George Cunningham talks to us about Manston and what comes next.

This interview was originally shot on the 10th and it has taken me a week to get to grips with video editing. I would have prefered to have pt this up sooner.

In this video:

  • Gale never thought to have a prospectus made for Manston
  • The Lib-Dems knocked a prospectus together and made it available internationally - here it is on the Chinese Government Website
  • The Lib-Dems have found investors in need of a consortium
  • The airport becomes less valable if it remains closed too long
  • Manston airport could be a significant part of our local industry
  • Manston airport is the only one in the UK citified to recycle aircraft
  • Manston will probably never be a significant passanger hub
  • It would be a huge loss if Manston were to be closed forever

Thanet's new Iron Lady?

Iris Johnson

Iris Johnson has been has achieved the honour of being the first democratically elected female leader of Thanet District Council.

Our congratulations to Iris Johnson Thanet's first female council leader. Iris has reportedly said that she plans to work in cooperation with the Conservatives to make Thanet better.

Let us hope that or own Iron Lady can do a better job than the many men that have held the post before.

If not there's an election next year...

Labour looses members ahead of key leadership vote

We now know why first women leader Cllr Johnson and not Cllr Poole became leader of the Council.

It seems that not only did Cllr Hart quit as leader of Thanet District Council but Cllr Poole also refused the leadership as he intended to quit the party altogether. As has Cllr Fenner.

According to Kent Online Cllr Iris Johnston said I am very sad. I have not heard directly from either Michelle or Alan. I am very fond of both of them and they have both been very hard-working councillors.

It has been suggested that Cllr Poole had been offered a position in the Labour cabinet perhaps in an attempt to encourage him to stay.

With Labour shedding members to the growing independent collective as Conservatives did previously how is the vote likely to stack up for choosing a leader?

Keep reading to see how the numbers stack up.

Last Chance To Put Colour Into Margate!

Recently Thanet Star posted about a Kickstarter project that is hoping to place some much-needed colour into Margate High Street.

Now, there is less than two days to go until fundraising ends. Will you be a part of this unique project?

The project, part of Turner Contemporary's "Summer Of Colour" festival, has successfully reached its 500 Goal, meaning that we will indeed be seeing many large colourful lampshades on Margate High Street in the coming weeks.

Woman on top after controversial resignation

Thanet District Council leader Clive Hart has resigned ahead of this week's AGM handing control of the council to Iris Johnson.

Iris Johnson

Amid allegations aimed at all and sundry Councillor Clive Hart resigned as leader of Thanet District Council yesterday. Hart, who tried to blame the Green party for his exit, posted the announcement on Facebook.

Councillor Iris Johnson was then confirmed to be taking over as council leader giving Thanet a sudden change to a female leader. (If anyone knows if this is the first lady leader of the council we have had please post a comment).

Johnson's leadership will last until the 15th (Thursday) when a vote will be taken at the public AGM.

Not Game Over for Manston say Thanet's Lib Dems

Despite the failure of Sir Roger Gale MP's (Conservative) consortium, to obtain shareholder support for a bid to buy Manston Airport, Thanet's Liberal Democrats have stated that this is not the end of the road.

Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary Candidates George Cunningham (North Thanet) and Russ Timpson (South Thanet) are making progress in finding investors for Manston Airport.

George Cunningham said: Yesterday's news that the consortium brought together by Sir Roger Gale MP has failed to gain the approval of the shareholders of Manston Airport is by no means the end of the road. Lib Dems are continuing to look for alternative solutions for jobs and growth for Manston and Thanet in general. The call for the airport to be closed on 15th May is entirely premature.

What have they been spending our money on?

Wasteful Labour and Tory councils up and down the country have blown more than 500,000,000 of tax payers' cash on vanity projects and lavish expenses, the Liberal Democrats have revealed.

A new dossier unveiled by Nick Clegg exposes how cash-strapped Tory and Labour councils have splashed out on gimmicks ranging from the utterly ridiculous to the downright incompetence.

From spending thousands of pounds on maintaining empty to libraries, to our own Tory/UKIP run Kent County Council paying off a chief executive who lasted only months in post. Clearly the fake solutions that UKIP have tried to offer have had little or no impact on wasteful spending in KCC.

See the map of the worst offenders.

The Lone (Green) Ranger

Thanet's only Green councillor (formerly independent) seems to be trying to run a one man crusade against everything he can find that is wrong in Thanet. Normally his focus is the "alleged" corruption in council however today our solo Green has been taking on the questionable animal trade that the Labour-Conservative coalition claims it is against but largely ignores.

This time, however, Thanet's Lone Green Ranger might have gone a bit too far after getting spooked by the port's rent-a-cop.

It seems Driver pushed the hired muscle away from him and might face charges of assault. It's a crazy world we live in folks.

We cannot afford to lose Manston say Lib Dems

Thanet's Liberal Democrat candidates call for the creation of an aircraft recycle site to create jobs and growth for Thanet.

Speaking at the "Save Manston" meeting last weekend, Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary Candidates George Cunningham (North Thanet) and Russ Timpson (South Thanet)have called for a new strategic plan for Manston airport, including a new focus for its use as an aircraft recycle site, as well as widening the search for investors.

The future of Manston airport is not necessarily in passenger traffic. The fact is that it is the only place in the UK having an environmental agency licence to recycle aircrafts. No single facility exists in the world currently to meet the huge worldwide demand expected in the next few years. Any new investor would find Manston a unique international proposition in this respect, said Russ Timpson, also an expert in this field.

The Liberal Democrat candidates also want to build links between Manston and East Kent College in order to also use the airport as a civil aviation training facility.
