Stopping TDC pulling a fast one on Margate

Is Thanet District Council trying to pull a fast one on Margate?

After some serious searching I have put together the information that Thanet District Council does not want you to see. Information that would allow you to ask for a Parish Council in Margate.

Just today Thanet Star posted about TDC's secret consultation over parishing Margate. The Margate Community Governance Review has been ongoing since the beginning of March and yet Thanet District Council have refused to post a link to it on their own website. It's there but it is very well hidden.

The Margate Community Governance Review should, in theory, give the people of Margate a chance to say that they want a Parish Council. After all someone needs to be keeping the local authority in line over the care of Margate.

Be very careful with that link above as the option new council link takes you to the obviously preferred TDC choice of "no change". The link you need to details of the parish council option is this one: Margate's Best Option: Parish or Town Council.

Margate to get Parish Council?

Margate might finally get the parish council it so desperately needs if TDC can figure out how to put a link on a web page...

As early as 2009 Thanet Star was saying Margate needs a parish council we warned Margate was missing out and the glaring thing that has always been missing from Margate has been a council of it's own and it shows.

Margate is pretty much the only unparished area in Kent and has the most closed shops, the most lack-lustre Christmas tree and and a lot of other issues that a dedicated small scale council of unpaid councillors could and should address.

There is a consultation which gives us the chance to say damn right we want a parish council for Margate and the link is, in theory, on this page but the link opens a new window with the page you were just looking at and not the consultation...

Nice one TDC.

Hope for Manston Airport

Today a Thanet MP will meet with parties interested in Manston Airport.

At a speech that Sir Gale (MP for North Thanet) made on Saturday he revealed that he would be meeting today at the House of Commons with interested parties that might possibly take on the commercial concerns of Manston airport.

Unable to say more due to the sensitive nature of the negotiations we wait hopeful of good news.

Kickstart Some Colour Into Margate High Street!

Our little Isle Of Thanet has seen almost no success through the use of crowd funding website Kickstarter, but we at Thanet Star have a really good feeling about this not-so-little project... And you can help it to happen!

Kickstarter craft-y logo

Local artist Emily Tull and designer Jenny Duff form KnitterKnitKnitKnit which is planning a project they have dubbed SHADES OF COLOUR which they hope will bring some much needed colour to our High Street, bring the community together and create a more positive atmosphere.

With the support of local eatery Proper Coffee House, Turner Contemporary and Arts Council England, paired with the funds raised from this KickStarter Project, the plan is to construct thirty-two giant, colourful lampshades to adorn the High Street, from top to bottom.

Outside Proper Coffee House

Each of the aforementioned lampshades will be created by the two ladies with help from people within the community at various workshops using crochet, weaving, and of course, as the name KnitterKnitKnitKnit suggests, knitting.

If you contribute funding to this KickStarter you will be giving some much needed colour to a High Street which has lost much of its life in recent years, but atop that, there are also various incentives for contributors from a "thank you email" (£5) to a private group workshop (£300) held at your place of business!

Promotional Image

The minimum that they are hoping to raise is £500 within a twenty-one day deadline, and after only three days they have raised almost half of that, so things are looking truly promising.

I myself will be contributing. £10 will get my name on one of the lampshades, £20 a photo! So, walking down the High Street and admiring these beautiful lampshades I will be able to spot my name, or possibly a photograph on one of them, how very unique! So, why not contribute money yourself as well? There is a minimum contribution of £1. Or get involved in the creative process! Visit the FaceBook Page or KickStarter project website for more information on how to get involved.

We at Thanet Star will be keeping you informed on how this project progresses and of course, I will be attending one or more of the workshops to help make these beautiful lampshades and photograph the fun!

So, what does everyone think of this project? Will you be contributing or getting involved at all? Leave your Comments below to connect with us.

The future of Manston Airport is not passengers

The meeting on Saturday made it clear that Manston Airport does have a future and that future could be very bright.

Speaking at the Manston Airport meeting this weekend Mr Timpson laid out several key possibilities for the future of the Airport.

Mr Timpson previously worked for BAA (airport operator) and is the Liberal Democrat candidate for Thanet South. Among his suggestions Timpson pointed out that Manston is the only site in the UK with the licence to carry out aircraft breaking and recycling. He went on to explain that due to changes here and in America there is a shortage of options for fleet operators with aircraft approaching the end of their operational lifespan.

A comment from a senior member of the Chamber of Commerce suggested that the analysis that they had put on showed that on paper there was no reason why Manston airport should not run at a profit of One Million Pounds a year but this would not come from passenger transport.

This view that freight and related airport activities (such as training and aircraft decommissioning, as suggested by Mr Timpson) could realistically be a profitable concern in Manston.

MP Roger Gale was, he said, able to identify businesses interested in operating from Manston. Being inexperienced in the field of air travel the North Thanet MP wondered if the right questioned had previously been asked and suggest that they had not.

Local Government Association Inspectors Peer Review Report

According to my sources the Local Government Association Inspectors visited Thanet District Council in early March to carry out a Peer Review. The report that result from this has been with the Chief Executive and the Council Leader (Labour Councillor Clive Hart) for around a month now and Clive Hart seems determined to sit upon it.

In order to find out exactly what Clive is playing at I have made a freedom of information request demanding a copy of the report or the specifics of the law being used to keep the report silent. I have also asked for a date as to when we can expect to see the report.

The request has been made publically and can be followed on whatdotheyknow.com.

TDC making a plan, honest.

Thanet District Council are stepping up plans and not, as I first read, having someone step up.

When I first read the headline Plans to find operator for Dreamland site steps up I honestly thought that someone had come forward to run the theme park. (Something I'd be more than willing to do). However on re-reading and re-re-reading it seems that the news is that the council are planning to find someone which is something we all expected them to have been doing already.

Apparently The council... has put together a funding package to start work on the project, though it has yet to find an operating company with the necessary technical expertise to run the park.

So, no actual news here then?

Did police allow Broadstairs woman to be killed?

Thanet Police

Today I read that four emergency call centre workers are being investigated for alleged gross misconduct by the Independent Police Complaints Commission as Judge Philip Statman criticises police handling of calls made by Anne-Marie Birch in the days before she was murdered in Broadstairs.

This brings to mind when Thanet Star writer Illisia wrote recently about the Kent police unwillingness to help two distressed children. We asked if the Kent Police priorities are out of order?

Are Labour really up to no good?

Thanet's Labour Party are once more in the spotlight for bad behaviour.

Clive Hart - drunk with power?

The Greens are accusing Labour's Clive Hart of interfearing with an indipendant investigation. The allegation is that Labour's Clive Hart and his Cabinet (Councillors Michelle Fenner, Allan Poole and Rick Everitt) have actually put forward a proposal to replace the officer carrying out the "independent" investigation.

The Labour led proposal would result in the departure of the Councilís Monitoring Officer who is supposed to be managing the investigation into the allegations of improper behaviour. The Greens are suggesting that the replacement would be more of a yes man answerable to the Labour folks who would have just installed him.

This is the same Labour leader that was accused of deselecting a perfectly functional and, by all accounts, good at his job councillor to get Kay Dark (who allegedly never does much work) a seat to stand so he could have a chair that he could control.

How many more accusations of improper manipulation can this Labour leadership weather?

Why did Will Scobie join the Tories?

Labour's Will Scobie has crossed the floor and joined the Conservative Party.

Labour's best chance of winning the South Thanet parliamentary seat has, today, announced that he will be standing as a Conservative candidate instead.

Speaking candidly at a press conference yesterday Will said that locally, at least, the two parties were so similar that they might as well be considered the same. Will also told shocked listeners that he had started to see that nationally the Labour party was far further to the left than he liked and now that the more extreme elements of the conservatives had outed themselves by joining UKIP he would feel much more at home with what was left of the conservative ranks.

The move, which has caused uproar in the Labour ranks was met with tight lipped silence from family members who clearly disapproved. His father suggested to press after that this was simply a case of youthful rebellion and that this was just a phase that Will needed to get out of his system. No serious politician wants to be a Tory, he said. All children experiment with things like drugs and Tory politics while at university and it was nothing to be ashamed of.

Clive Hart could not be reached for comment but is expected to give Will a mean look and block him on twitter until he repents - something people close to the leader expect should happen any time now really.
