Thanet Police: Have YOU Got A Horror Story To Share?

Recently Thanet Star have become aware of some cases of Thanet Police mistreating innocent people. We have a huge amount of respect for our Police, of course, they protect us to the best of their abilities, but is the cost perhaps too high? Thanet Star investigate...

I have personally had a mixed selection of bad, and good, experiences with our local police. Unfortunately, the negative appears to far outweigh the positive.

Not only that, but I recently posted about Thanet crime rates, which are disturbingly high. Which begs the question, is something very wrong with the system?..

This question hit closer to home recently after two of my friends were recently poorly treated by the force, in a "guilty until proven innocent" manner, physically, mentally and emotionally, I have decided that this is a matter that clearly needs further investigation...

Having appealed on Social Networks for further cases, several people have already approached me with their shocking stories. Innocent people have been pushed around, sworn at and insulted, homes broken into without Warrant or probable cause, and other such clear violations of their basic civil rights.

This is clearly a very important issue that needs investigating, so I am now appealing to you, the Thanet Star readers, to tell me, completely confidentially unless otherwise requested, about your experiences.

Please Comment to publicly discuss, Share with your friends to inform others of my investigation, and most importantly, email me with your personal experiences.

Thanet Star aims to be "The Voice Of The People", and with your help, we can be.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Margate Gets Serious About Crime

Thanks to the intervention of Thanet District Council, Kent Police and Margate Task Force, Margate Police now have more power over anti-social behaviour around town.

As outlined on the Kent Police website, it has been announced today that many troubled areas in Margate have become "Dispersal Areas", as of Saturday February 1st, lasting a period of six months, ending on Thursday July 31st.

A Dispersal Area means that, if two or more persons are found to be causing trouble within these areas, police have the power to "disperse" them, enforcing their new right to move these people on from the area, or in the case of those below the age of sixteen who are not accompanied by an adult, returned to their home.

Areas covered include the main High Street, Mill Lane multi-story car park, Hawley Square and Cecil Street. To view a map showing the entirety of areas included, click here.

Actions such as intimidating the public, shouting and swearing, threats of violence, drug related activity, criminal damage and assaults will all mean action by our law enforcers, thanks to the Anti-Social Behaviour Act 2003.

This could mean a huge reduction in anti-social related crime rates in our seaside town, which have become worryingly high. I recently reported on this.

Some would argue that it is a violation of our rights to be "moved on" in such a manner, however.

What do YOU think? Comment and discuss.

How can a council be so wrong?

According to some sources hundreds of people bath in Walpole Bay yet Thanet District Council have been claiming that only four or five people a year do so.

They claim, no one uses the bay so Thanet District Council want to stop testing the water and make it a no bathing area. Yet this report seems to make liars out of Thanet District Council.

This leaves us a simple question: Is Clive Hart's Labour-led council deliberately speaking falsehoods or are they just utterly unable to do their job?

Wealth creation in Thanet

Real wealth creation in Thanet connot afford to rely on house prices, loans and big enterprise that leave once they have sucked out all of the value they can.

From 2014 wealth creation in places like Margate High Street will need to focus on creating opportunity for sustained economic activity. That means businesses, sometimes very small businesses, that are profitable enough to keep going longer than a year or two. It's all well and good hoping for some magical one-size-fits-all solution to drop from the sky and give us thousands of ready made jobs but that is never going to happen.

Getting Thanet Innovating

There is a secret to innovation and it is not in creating new industrial parks or unsustainable house builds.

Recently I talked about Getting Tahnet Working and how innovation was the only key we have to generating a sustainable flow of new jobs.

Time and again we are told innovation is dependant on culture and that culture is something we can build.

The Guardian reports that Thanet is divided over whether hopes for revival lie in ports and factories Ė or culture and cafes and miss the point entirely. We need to foster culture to foster innovation but we need to rebuild things like our port to increase opportunity.

However without the culture that gives us innovation what use is opportunity?

Getting Thanet working

What Margate needs, what Thanet as a whole needs too, is jobs but the big question is how do we provide them?

In this post I take a common sense look at work, employment and jobs in Thanet.

The first thing we think of when we talk of getting more people into work is jobs. We talk about creating new jobs. We talk about joblessness. We say this person is earning and thus contributing but not that one like the whole issue was cut and dry.

Admittedly for the vast majority of people gainful employment may be in the form of "a job" but where are these jobs going to come from and are there other options?

That might seem like two entirely separate questions but they have one single simple answer. An answer I am going to share with you right now.

The great Thanet letting agents review

So many people in Thanet rent their home but what do we know about the agencies that do the actual business of letting?

This is why we at Thanet Star have started a massive undertaking to get to the bottom of who is good and who is bad in the world of Thanet letting agents. With your help we will review all of the letting agents in Thanet. Every. Last. One.

Each of Thanet's letting agents will get their own page upon which you will be free to talk about your experiences with that agency (good and bad). Those of you that have rented through the agency in question can tell us if it was a good experience and if you would recommend the letting agents to others or if you might be tempted to say stay away! Do they work only with good landlords or is there more of a mixed bag? Tell us, for example, if you felt like you got good value for money or if there were hidden charges.

For our part we will try to give you an unbiased overview of a new Thanet letting agent each week. We will try to cover details such as the fees they charge, the areas they service and the sort of rents that you might expect to pay. Along with those details we will make sure that you have the address and contact details of the agency in question as well as a link to their website.

Council tax freezes?

This is one prediction I am happy to be wrong about.

In my predictions for 2014 I foretold of Tax Hikes after many years of Council Tax freezes. Well it looks like I might be wrong as talks are afoot to freeze council tax for another year. Good news I'd say. Do you agree?

We're back but for how long?

After an interesting weekend in which Thanet Star went dark for four days we are back and better than ever.

As we said on social media at the time there are a number of reasons why we went offline for a while. I know the few who do not like the truth being told would like to feel they are responsible the truth is as ever more interesting and yet more mundane.

Keep reading to find out why we went, why we are back and what you might be able to do to keep us back.

Can the Council Clowns

Thanet District Council is surrounded by secrecy and corruption the reports say so why are the clowns still here?

It is my opinion that for too long we have accepted council members acting like clowns as the norm and this has to stop. Being a member of a council should not be a political point scoring way to make a bit of pocket money it should be a sacredly held duty to serve your home area.

I say it is time to kick the clowns out of Thanet District Council. But how do we do that?

CATURDAY: Success Stories

Every Saturday we at Thanet Star share cat-themed posts. Some funny, some are appeals from local charities, some are just plain cute. This week, we want to inspire you with the success stories of local charities...

TAG Pet Rescue logo

TAG (Thanet Animal Rescue) Pet Rescue spoke fondly of Jack, a black and white cat who was with them for exactly one year until he finally found his forever home. Due to his fur colour, a notoriously difficult-to-rehome type of cat, he was sadly overlooked for far too long, but, amazingly he was rehomed exactly one year after he first came to them. They fell in love with him straight away and took him home. Wonderful timing, and a happy ending indeed.

TAG Jack

Cats In Crisis logo

Cats In Crisis told us of two stories that started very sadly, but ended wonderfully.

Valentine was an aptly named young black and white cat who was abandoned in a taxi on Valentines Day. They informed us that he was full of character and he would literally jump into your arms when you went to see him or clamber in your bag hoping you had not noticed he was trying to be smuggled out. He now lives with six other friends, and is, I quote, still crazy they jest.

Valentine new home

Poor Fred had quite a horrid start in life, being abandoned by his humans and then, essentially becoming a stray surviving on the kindness of a kind hearted local resident, he was attacked by a not-so-kind man with a garden fork! Cats In Crisis took him into their care, nursed him back to health, and found him a new home. However, he was very tough on the two other cats he lived with and had to be returned to the charity to be rehomed, yet again. A lady was however found shortly after who has no other animals and he is now king of the castle

A fresh look for 2014

A New Year Demands a Fresh New Look.

Following the moaning from a minority that like to pick holes in everything Thanet Star has moved on to a fresh new look based on the recently revised layout. We've shifted from a green based look to a cleaner blue based look.

Already half of our writers have started saying "but I liked the green" showing that there really is no pleasing everyone.

Thanet Facebook Page Owner Sued?

Thanet commentary Facebook Page "In Touch With Thanet" has been threatened with legal action.

Whether or not you see In Touch With Thanet as a blog or simply some periphery social media presence it cannot be denied that the more than two thousand followers of the page enjoy the almost daily posts. For those of you living under a rock this last year In Touch With Thanet is a page where the news about Thanet is often posted along with first hand video and photography of events and people feel they can freely discuss what is going on in Thanet.

Somehow this has upset people.

Quite what a Facebook page could have possibly have posted in the name of political debate that could be worthy of litigation currently escapes me.

Thanet Round Up

After taking some legal advice the stories I have been working on are going to be sat on for a while.

I will be publishing what I have uncovered but it will not be yet. We will have to wait for a few months. It will be worth it I hope.

So until then let us have a look at what else is going on arround Thanet.

The Kentish Gazette have published on KentOnline.co.uk about the new man in charge of policing while the Thanet Gazette published about the sick attack on an elderly couple (Cynthia Ratcliffe, 65, and her husband, Neil, 68) which is the same story we mentioned in Byte Sized when we linked to the original story (uncredited by the Gazette).

Meanwhile in the blogs Big News Margate has called for Alan Poole to go which is a popular sentiment accorss a lot of social media as well at the moment even given his slightly late appology. It seems a lot of people have a lot of unhappy things to say about the District Council's services.

2014 Foretold

My Future in a Crystal Ball

Last Year I predicted that Mary Portas would get the go ahead, that the "Tesco" build by Bluewater at Alington House would get the go ahead and that Dreamland would limp towards improvement but very little would actually happen. Overall I was right (Animal Transportation, for example) or close to (no significant fires, said I) on almost all of my predictions. Let's see if I can do that again this year.

1. Changing focus. This year I think we will see a change in focus with Ramsgate getting better attention but also with a shift in Margate towards Margate High Street as the needs of these two very different areas are addressed.

2. Odd election results. In elections and by-elections this year (and next) I think we will start to see the hype over UKIP start to fade as people realise that although they say things that sound good they are largely just the conservative party in drag. UKIP will not do anywhere near as well as predicted and will continue to lose ground as their rampant racism is unmasked. On the other hand the growing demand for change and effective local (and national) government get all muddled up in people's minds we will see election results that surprise and make little actual sense.

3. Rampant Council Paranoia. With little reference to reality or the demands of the public the council will continue to be utterly terrified of people knowing what really goes on and as such Thanet District Council will continue to fight the public right to film at their meetings even in the face of growing public dissatisfaction, protest and demands for transparency.

Rubbish collection not up to scratch?

Rubbish collection was... rubbish?

Rubbish piles up in Thanet

We've been talking on Facebook with readers about the quality of rubbish collection over the holiday season. With very few exceptions it seems as if almost no one in Thanet was anywhere close to satisfied with the rubbish collection.

How was the rubbish collection where you were?
