They call it stealth inflation

When products get smaller rather than go up in price it is called Stealth Inflation.

8,314 Children From Thanet Live in Poverty

According to Recent Figures more than one child in four (28%) from Thanet live in poverty.

The Campaign to End Child Poverty has published new figures that provide a child poverty map of the country. According to The Press Release: The Institute for Fiscal Studies has warned that child poverty will rise by 400,000 children by 2015 unless the government takes a more progressive approach to tackling the deficit.

Alison Garnham, Executive Director of the Campaign, said: Child poverty costs us billions picking up the pieces of damaged lives and unrealised potential, so itís a false economy if we donít prioritise looking after children today.

She went on to call the current cuts a disaster when she said: Targeting cuts on families will prove both an economic and a social disaster, with businesses losing billions of pounds of demand and families struggling to keep their kids clothed, fed and warm.

The Government, says, Alison Garnham, must act now. The Government urgently needs a serious plan to stop the rise in unemployment and to create jobs so that young people and parents can get out of the dole queue and into the workplace. We need a plan to target investment through the family purse to stimulate the economy, so that shops, services and businesses get the customers they need to stay afloat and recruit staff.

The map shows just how big an issue child poverty across the country has become and the gross levels of inequality that children face in every region. Here, for example, is an oddly coloured map of Thanet with blue and green areas showing the worst areas of Thanet for Child poverty which in places approaches half of all children living in that area.

GEEK 2013 is open

I'm posting this to you from inside GEEK 2013.

I will be here most of the day so if you want to meet up and have a chat with one of Thanet's blogeratti then look for the tall hansom chap in the top hat. Let's see how many people come and say hi.

That said yesterday's opening ceremony was very good. I said hello to Will Scobie (Margate's very young mayor) as well as Iris Johnston who both stopped by Pie Factory in Margate Old Town to see what was going on. I'd have liked to challenge Will to a game of custard punching (you had to be there) had I the chance.

Pictures to follow.

41 Unemployed to Every Job in Thanet

Thanet Officially has a Job Shortage

Official figures show that there are 134,200 people living in Thanet. They also show that from December to Janurary the number of available jobs fell from 400 to 300. Yet unemployment has hit 12.2% up from the 5.3% of 2007.

If in 2010 the BBC was saying that Thanet was the worse placed to cope with recession what now? Well in 2013 we are still the worst district for unemployment and we have the lowest rate of primary industry in Kent.

Let's put those numbers together. Let us assume that there are really 400 jobs going. 12.2% unemployment gives us roughly 16,372 unemployed people which leaves fractionally over 41 Job Seekers to every job in Thanet.

The old cry of "get a job" can now be met with an authoritative "from where - your backside?"

Crime Rates Highest in Thanet

Thanet District Councils own figures show that crime in Thanet is twice that of some other areas

Even in cases where the rate of crime is not yet half that of Thanet's Thanet still has a big lead on crime rates. One is forced to wonder what exactly we are doing wrong?

Thanet Men Die Young

National government statistics on life expectancy show that Thanet men have the lowest life expectancy at birth of all Kent districts.

This interesting factoid comes direct from no other than Thanet District council themselves. The question it raises is why are the figures as they are?

I imagine that the reason is that there is a higher rate of poor health among the poorest sections of Thanet. Poverty tends towards a higher suicide rate and this is higher among young jobless males at around 6.5%. I kid you not. The good news is that this rate of death has dropped over the last ten years but the bad news is that drop off has stopped.

Add to that the most at risk of violent assault group is also young men and it becomes easy to see what is staggering the numbers. The mortality rate might actually be the same across all demographics but young men are in the most danger in Thanet.
