This just in: Mary Portas not messiah (Joe might disagree)

It turns out that Mary continues to just be some girl with a camera.

Who knew, right.

Just in case anyone is confused. Margate gets cash whatever else happens.

Mary (who is not the messiah) might get to make a film about giving it to us and claim all the credit for government spending.

People will complain. (They always do)

It will make a small dent when the dust has settled.

That is all.

Dr Who unable to save Margate, Mary Portas without a hope?

I a blatant attempt to milk this story for all it is worth I ask: If Dr Who can't save Margate who does this Mary girl think she is fooling?

BIGNEWS MARGATE: I don't love Margate that much

I must be weak, but two episodes of the BBC drama series "True Love" has shown me just how much I care for Margate, and I have to admit I don't care enough to lie, frankly without being heavily sedated, I can't make another episode.

By the way, Mike says he's sorry

Cllr Mike Harrison says he's sorry in that way politicians do when they have to do so under protest.

I'm sure the world is a better place and all that.

Argumentative: Mary Portas For and Against

I attempt to argue two opposing points of view.

Mary Portas will be bad for Thanet

Of course Mary Portas will be bad for Thanet. I mean, come on, just look at that hair. Anyone with hair that (un) stylish couldn't possibly be up to anything but no good.

Mary Portas comes here pretending to help but really she just wants to make a TV program that makes her look good. Margate can live without that sort of help - no mater how much money she promises us we should not sell our right to freedom of speech in the hope that a few quid more can save our dead high street. We need more art galleries not shops.

If we wanted a vibrant high street we would have elected a Council that would have rejected Westwood Cross.

Mary Portas can't make hundreds of thousands of people come to Margate every day through the hypnotic power of television. It's one thing for a some camp bloke called Simon to use TV to arrange a Christmas number one but have you seen that state of the rail link from Kent? It's over two hours just from Maidstone.

No one wants to come to Margate and spend money that badly.

So Ladies and gents I suggest to you that no true Brit would disagree that Mary Portas should get back in her chauffeur drive limo and bog off back to snob-land so we can get back to bitching about important things like unemployment and the lack of jobs.

In closing Mary Portas would be bad for Thanet because she has told fibs, she has threatened to take her ball and go home if she can't boss us about and her fashion sense is lacking something wicked bad. Also her hair.

Keep reading as I argue the flip side that Mary Portas is the second coming of high streets and that Elvis is alive and well and living in Southend-on-sea. For my actual opinion please see Mary Portas is not the Messiah.

Mary Portas is not the massiah

Anyone would think we didn't know how TV companies work.

With all the fuss that Ms Portas has caused one could be forgiven for thinking that we were expecting the second coming of Christ. The company that won the bid to tell us what's best for us and to spend a wedge of money doing so is a TV company. That means that they are going to behave like TV company.

Mary, my-way-or-the-high-way, Portas is not here to fix our high-street she's here to turn it into feel-good entertainment.

So called "reality TV" has not, is not and never will be about reality. Reality TV is manipulated, directed, staged, scripted, set up, orchestrated for maximum impact, carefully edited and gagged to appear like no effort was ever made.

The reason for the outrage is that we were expecting a knight in shining armour to come and save us from incompetent and selfishly motivated high-street failure (posing as governance). We hoped for a messiah to save our dying high-street. This is not what we got thus this:

Off with her head! How Mary Queen of Shops enraged Margate's traders - Home News - UK - The Independent

Her charisma, drive and retail savvy were meant to rejuvenate some of Britain's most deprived towns. But residents of Margate are rising up against Mary Portas, claiming she is putting the interests of her television company before their own.

Of course there are those of us that hope that being in a freak show could somehow help. Maybe it will.

There are those of us fearful that being in the freak show will only further the carrier of Mary Portas at the cost of failed hopes. Maybe it will.

There are those of us that think that the money could have been spent on something more sensible, safe, conservative and ultimately doomed to fail. That it could.

The only sure thing so far is that we are clearly divided on this:

Margate divided over its role in Mary Portas reality show | Saturday sktech | Zoe Williams | From the Guardian | The Guardian

Zoe Williams: The Kent seaside resort is not sure whether the Mary Portas pilot for its high street will be good for business

There is no denying that money cannot buy the attention, and national awareness that this controversy will bring.

Fan the flames. Summon the villagers with flaming pitchforks. Call for the heated debate. Find an opinion and strongly disagree with it. Pick a corner and fight it. Do the dance of vroomfondel and majikthise like never before. Make a fuss. Post angry letters to editors. Object. Object to the objection. Make the most of it.

But when we are done with the fun let us not forget to hold the TV company and Mary Portas to account. Let us tell the story that they do not want told. Let us report what happened when the camera's stopped rolling.

Let us, in short, tell the truth boldly and publicly.

Labour may never deal with Cllr Mike Harrison

Labour cannot afford to de-list Cllr Mike Harrison no mater how hot it gets.

Tony and no doubt other bloggers would like to see Cllr Mike Harrison removed from the Labour group over his out-of-order behaviour but this is unlikely to ever happen. Labour hold power in Thanet by the slimmest margin as it is and so Harrison is safe.

Worse yet making Cllr Mike Harrison join Sandy Ezekiel as an independent would currently hand him more power rather than remove it.

This is how the political landscape currently stands:

Thanet District Council Party Political Landscape

As you can see Labour are ahead by just a tiny bit. Loss of Cllr Mike Harrison would mean loss of that lead which they have fought tooth and nail to obtain promising a lot of power away to "independents" to do so.

Keep reading to see how removing Cllr Mike Harrison from the Labour group would hand him more power than he has ever had.

Why blue flags are a non-news item

This is why Thanet's blue flags are not the news.

Plans to fill space left by Cllr Brian Goodwin

Politics marches on and plans to fill the space left by Cllr Brian Goodwin are well under way

To be honest I'm still in shock. Having been out of the loop for much of May I was unaware of Brian's passing.

He was one of the few councillors that I knew personally and in a non political context. Brian was an honest-to-goodness, does-his-job, cares-about-peoople, decent councillor. We have too few of his like.

Nostalgia does not a council run, it would seem.

Thanet News Network » Westgate-on-Sea Election Announced

The process to fill a vacancy on Thanet District Council following the sad death of Cllr Brian Goodwin has started. If there is more than one candidate then an election to fill the vacancy will be held on Thursday 5 July 2012.

Maybe, later, I'll look at the impact on the balance of power. For now I need to come to terms with the news, old though it might be.

Thanet's (excessive) CCTV is legally irrelevant

Is this the death of CCTV?

When magistrates announced that an open and shut case was to be dismissed because CCTV images were not clear enough they may have owned up to the worthlessness of CCTV.

With image quality sufficient to identify and arrest the man shown being said to be not proof of guilt one has to ask what the point of CCTV is in the first place. At least as it stands now.

Ramsgate cat cruelty case thrown out after a court decided there was not enough evidence | This is Kent

THE trial has collapsed of a man accused of swinging a cat around by its tail outside Ramsgate's Camden Arms. Magistrates decided that CCTV images showing the incident, in October last year, were not clear enough to proceed with the case.

I'll be addressing this issue further.

Mike Harrison, arithmetic boy, is so gay his hair's made of cotton

Councillor Harrison's comments against fellow councillor Ian Driver make as much sense as this headline.

Gay pride 091 - Marche des fiertés Toulouse 2011.jpg
I admit that calling Harrison gay is about as mature as the other school yard insults that have been battered around of late but even so they are a lot less cruel than the words Councillor Mike Harrison and Councillor John "I hope you get aids" Worrow have been batting around.

These guys are clearly the arithmetic boys of our council - adding trouble, subtracting pleasure, dividing attention, and multiplying ignorance. They'll never be the men their mothers are. I'd ask them how old they think they are but I have my doubt that they could even count that high with their shoes on.

With just one more brain between them perhaps the arithmetic boys could form a passible halfwit because these particular throwbacks surely cannot be seriously ignorant of changing attitudes over the last thirty to forty years.

No one cares if you'd prefer to have a candle-lit dinner with the hoff or JLo. The arithmetic boys have nothing to fear because the simple fact is that that no matter how gay a man might be the simple truth is that he would be more likely to find a slap to the face more attractive than Councillor Mike Harrison or Councillor John Worrow even if they waxed their legs and put on a pretty dress.

The biting sarcasm continues - keep reading...
