So apparently Thanet District Council have agreed to "consider" the impact of a possible Tesco on the Scenic Railway because it is a listed building.
Two thoughts occur to me on this matter.
1. The scenic railway is currently a blackened stump and as such is not likely to object to Tesco. On the other hand Tesco might object to the sad remains spoiling the manager's view during staff meetings.
2. What does "consider" actually mean in this context anyway. Are the council just going to say: "Right, well, I think five minutes considering is quite enough lads, let's get on with rubber stumping this so then"?
Things might be different if the fun fair still existed there and indeed a certain band of developers had fulfilled their obligations to repair the listed structure. How much worse can the sight of a Tesco actually be than views of bare tarmac and an award winningly ugly tower block.
Has anyone stopped to ask what bunch of sea-side hating bureaucrats gave planning consent for Arlington House in the first place?
Actually that is a darn good question. Would one of our skilled local researchers care to let us know which party were in power when planning consent for that monster was passed?
By comparison it doesn't mater how ugly the Tesco building might actually turn out to be because it will still look right at home next to the district's tallest eye-sore.
