How to buy Thanet (part two)

I have been taking a long look at Thanet related domain names that have (as yet) gone unpurchased.

Here is part two of my findings where I hint at what could be done with a quick slip of a credit card.

Last time I pointed out that www.thanet.eu was a domain name that was still for sale priced at $10 (which is about £6.50) and this was likely to help the site that uses this as it's name rank in the top 10 for the search "Thanet".

What else could you rank for?

Remembering that the site I link to offers domain privacy for free the person that chooses something like www.clive-hart.com or even www.clivehart.com could easily find themselves with a website that ranks first for the Labour leader's own name.

What a difference it could make if this was a pro-labour site verses it being a an anti-labour site. Yet no one has yet snapped up this bargan domain.

Given the amount of time left until the elections there is just the right amount of time to get a lot pf pages listed in Google with someone's opinion on not only Clive but Roger Latchford or Simon Moores or Bob Grove or any other candidate.

Now I know that elections are not won online (yet) but they can be heavily influenced especially among the younger voters. And some "fact" getting out on line or some smug blogger pretending to be you could do a lot of damage at the wrong time.

Think also what variations on Thanet 2011 could be used for. The first (and maybe second) site owner to put together an election specific site is likely to see a lot of traffic and have the benefit of being somewhere between "voice of the people" and "king-maker".

Google is going to be awash with people looking for "facts" as election day approaches and anyone wise enough to step up with a well timed and well ranked blog could impact opinion and take a hefty slice of the traffic. A good name is a huge boost towards ranking well and having a domain name that is the keywords you want to rank for does a lot of the hard work for you.

A Thanet election blog could be the jumping off point to a powerful new voice while a fake candidate could be the jumping off point to a damning public attack for which there may be no real antidote.

For council members that have p*ssed people off - prevention is better than cure.

How to buy Thanet (part one)

I have been taking a long hard look at the domain names that have (as yet) gone unpurchased relating to Thanet. Some real supprises came up as well as some interesting ideas.

Here is part one of my findings.

The big surprise was that www.thanet.eu was still an available domain name. Priced at $10 (which is about £6.50) not only is this quite cheap but highly topical and likely to make the first page of the Google search results.

Possible uses include the obvious such as a high ranking Thanet blog via protest sites (think various pro-Thanet but anti something else (like the china gateway) web site ideas) to simply trying to tap into the web traffic related to those of us still searching for Thanet related content.

If a blog were to plop down here it might want to have a slightly Europe aware stance. Perhaps reporting on EU happenings and their impact on the UK and Thanet specifically.

Talking of blogs www.ThanetBlog.com as $15 (about £9.65) and www.ThanetBlog.co.uk at $14.50 (about £9.35) are both unclaimed.

Likewise www.thanetblogarchive.com which suggests some sort of collective of back issues is waiting for a buyer at just $13.99 (roughly £9).

A big supprise was that www.thanetlife.eu ($10/£6.50) was still an available Thanet domain name. Uses here include being a bit of a prankster, satire or selling it on at a big mark up once a certain councillor figures what you have done.

If you fancy a big protest then the www.thanetcouncil.com domain is available for $13.99 (roughly £9). Uses include making a better version of the council website, mocking the council or campaigning for election next year.

Coincidently (Tony) the Big News Margate domain names www.bignewsmargate.com ($13.99/£9), www.bignewsmargate.co.uk ($14.50/£9.35) and www.bignewsmargate.eu ($10/£6.50) are all open for registration and (using the site I've linked to only) come with free domain and email forwarding (so you can stay where you are and still use it).

Interestingly the full set for Eastcliff Richard is still available and (on the site linked to) has free registration privacy which would suit the likes of ECR or anyone wanting to run off with the identity.

There are also plenty of good blog and news domain names still available from Ramsgate Times, Broadstairs Beat or Thanet Herald in the old guard of newspaper style names to modern versions such as Thanet Blog (as mentioned), Thanet Wave or islehaveone.co.uk (think about it).

Next time I'm going to take a look at how much damage or success domain names could lend or take from next year's council ellections.

Please note currency conversions are a rough estimate, do not take into account mark up taken by your bank or changes in the rate of exchange. If the the pound was said to have gained against the dollar or the dollar fell against the pound it means the price probably just went down for us lot.

Outages

Yes Thanet Star has had some outages. This is called getting robbed by some oik on the train and having to stop all my cards - including the ones that pay for my server. The good news is the server guys have given me a week's grace and the police have found the thief.

All's well that ends well.

Cllr David Green has started blogging again. It has taken me the best part of a week to notice but the political season has started for sure, not only that David Green is back in the land of the blogger.

Night flights not such a good deal

I'm not sure I follow Tony's logic nor his reasoning for supporting the new Night Flights at Manston.

The main crux of his argument is that on the QC scale the proposed flights would be a quarter as noisy as 747s. However we are actually talking about 6db less noise. Not so much I think.

BIGNEWS MARGATE: Manston - 10 of these could be landing every night, what an outrage!

I for one would rather see the100 plus jobs at Manston maintained with the hope that many more will be created in the future, but we will see a lot of hysterical reports in the coming weeks,

Tony tells us the new airbus A380 is rated at QC0.5 on landing and QC 2 which means 87 to 89.9 EPNdB on landing and 93 to 95.9 EPNdB on take off. That's still a lot of sound.

Yes, technically there is a significantly greater amount of energy needed to make 95db as 89db but the difference to our ears is quite small. The wikipedia tells us that due to the logarithmic nature of human aural perception, this 3dB change is only perceived as a small change in the noise level. So while the white cliffs of Ramsgate might suffer less is this argument just one of degrees?

I think it is.

Cliffs definitely about to fall down says Ramsgate blogger

Ramsgate blogger, Michael Child, once more sets out to try and explain to TDC that the cliffs are in a bit of a state. (A bit like the rest of Thanet, then).

thanetonline: Royal Sands Development Ramsgate, Pleasurama Cliff, is it Safe?

Once again this development has problems, a minor symptom here is that small bits of the cliff façade have been falling onto the site from above for some time.
