Montefiore Avenue bill hits 20000

The chronicles of the land in Montefiore Avenue continue with the Isle of Thanet Gazette announcing that Thanet District Council (TDC) have spent just shy of half the lands values on legal costs. When one starts to factor for the cost in staff time as well TDC may well have spent more than the value oft he land before it even goes to sale.

The fact that Thanet Council have needed to hire expert help to fight the fairly substantial claims of locals suggests to me that TDC could far better save money by knowing when to quit. Not every fight needs to be fought and not ever battle needs to be won.

The very reason for this legal battle is that (Tory dominated) TDC is desperate to make up money that it has been over spending and the current round of sell-offs seems to be costing more than it is raising. Would it not be cheaper if TDC cut costs like any sensible organisation?

No more Standards Board?

It looks like the new government will drop the much talked about Standards Board in order to save money. What do you think about this?

Vote for Margate as the Best Beach in Britain

A competition run by Cadbury in celebration of the 99 has given us a chance to promote the Thanet in a positive light for once.

Rather than just moaning about the lack of people coming to Margate beach we have the opportunity to do something about it too. Even better you can do it without even leaving your own computer chair.

You can vote for Margate beach to be the Best UK Beach in a competition being run by Cadbury.

Yes Cadbury might be planning to manufacture in Poland and might now be owned by a US company but the facts of the competition still remain the same. Someone has to win first place, scoop the publicity and generally do well as a result. It might as well be us.

The link can be found on the flash heavy www.cadburyicecreamland.com website but for those of you who want to skip all that you can nip over to the Vote Page and support Thanet.

Love Music Hate Racism

Apparently there is to be a Thanet event to Love Music Hate Racism... judging by this Facebook group. Sadly however the organisers have said no more than it will be 11th September somewhere in in Margate. Anyone with some more facts please feel free to share.

Edit Peter Checksfield informs me that one can read all about it in today's Thanet Times. I will be taking a look later.

20% chance of change

There is now a 20% chance that I will shortly move out of the area for work. As such I may not be able to maintain a Thanet based blog while no longer in Thanet.

Rather than let this blog die my intention is to find a team of co-writers that will be able to write for Thanet Star. If you feel that the team should include you please let me know.

Election day blues.

Tony Flaig quite rightly points to the dogs dinner that has been made of the voting this year and compares us to a Banana republic.

With a growing number of voters reporting that they were unable to cast votes and stories of people queueing for over two and a half hours surely we are going to see calls for seats to be re-contested and strongly so in light of the now unlikely ability of any party to form a majority.

Compare the over crowding to the fact that I did not see another voter when I voted today and all one can ask is - will this ballot of the people even be allowed to stand? Is a re-election this year now a sure thing?

Am I the only one that voted?

Am I the only one in North Thanet that voted?

I know, of course, that I can not be the only one that cast a vote. Even with our really poor turnout record a turn out of one voter would still be exceptional. However one could be forgiven for thinking that no one else has bothered. I popped out to vote just after lunch and I saw exactly no one at all.

Have we all just given up like Michael Britton and resigned ourselves to the fact that Mr Gale will continue to be MP?

What are the conservatives hiding?

Can any one tell me why the Conservatives are the only party to more or less refuse to take part in the 2010 poll of candidate's opinions?

While I did not expect Captain Give-up-before-I start of the Labour party to take part I would have thought Mr Gale might have had the guts to tell us what he thinks. (Michael Britton is probably off to sunnier parts of the world anyway... oh no wait that's conservatives too)

BBC News - Election 2010: Online volunteers to scrutinise MPs

About 6,000 volunteers sign up for a UK-wide project which aims to ensure MPs stick to their promises during the next Parliament.

Apparently 6% of Tory candidates have given answers to the online poll. So what are they hiding?
