Thanet Star

Anyone want to hire an IT expert?

The world of running your own web based IT business is not such a cozy place to be right now. It looks very much like I may need to take on work outside of my normal range in order to keep the cash flow at a level I can live with. Fortunately for you I still intend to maintain my web server and blogs.

This might mean working for someone else though.

That's not such a bad thing as I have discovered that jobs needing my skills range from about £25,000 to £60,000 depending on location and specialization of skills. So as a result anyone needing a Web Server Engineer, SEO Expert or New Media Analyst should drop me an email. I'm probably the nearest thing to Sir Tim Berners-Lee's that Thanet has and there is only one of me.

Has this election got legs in Thanet?

Is World Wide Web Founder and inventor Sir Tim Berners-Lee's contribution to democracy worth another Labour government? That's the question of the day as far as my vote is concerned.

On the one hand giving us the tools to see just how well the government is doing is an idealists wet dream. Government is held to account and everyone is (given time) better off for it.

On the other hand that would mean letting Labour have one more round in power...

Is Sir Tim Berners-Lee's contribution to democracy worth another Labour government?

Much of Sir Tim's work with the UK government focuses on making more data available. As much as possible in fact. Something that is good for a party that believes it is largely doing the right thing and not too good for those with something to hide....

It's a hard call and one that could give Labour the power it needs to cling on one last time. Certainly Conservatives are faced with a hard choice: back the project with Sir Tim Berners-Lee to remove it as an election decider but by doing so say that Labour got something (very) right OR shout it down and risk loosing votes from those that understand this great mans visionary impact on United Kingdom politics and the potential for real reform that will arise from the work he is doing.

As someone who never votes party political but considers the issues come voting time I am, in theory, part of the group that both parties need to address.

Then again, what hope would we have of ousting Mr Gale (Conservative) in favour of a fading political party? Furthermore with such a "safe seat" reputation can Thanet hope to have a voice at all?

Thanet Council fail at housing

Thanet District Council's (TDC) housing provision is no-where near good enough according to recent reports.

TDC Ranked 65th out of a total of 67 (second from bottom) for all councils in this area when it comes to providing affordable housing according to the Shelter Housing League Table.

The 2009 requirement for affordable housing was 1,544 homes but Thanet District Council planned to provide just 70 homes and managed of that only 63. Using a fairly standard 10% confidence interval we can authoritatively say that TDC made no actual difference having failed to significantly act on the need.

Words and Pictures

Once more I am going to be kept away from blogging by far less interesting things like paperwork and other stuff no one should ever have to deal with. While I am attempting to retain the last vestages of my sanity here is another Thanet blog that you might like to look at.

"WORDS AND PICTURES"

I'm 37, live in Margate, Kent with my partner of 9 years and my two boys. I was diagnosed with Scoliosis around 1990. They straightened my spine with a combination of metal rods attached either side and a bone graft and spinal fusion of the top half of my spine, using donated bone. I now suffer with chronic pain in the left side of my neck and shoulder, back pain throughout the length of my spine and pain in the left sacroiliac joint in my pelvis. I have created this blog after my friend, Jason said it would be a very good way to display my poems and many photographs that I have taken recently.

Can the Turner Centre save Thanet?

Yes, but is it art? This is the question being asked right now. Not just of the Fulton "walk" that nobody showed up for but the entire Turner centre itself.

I would love to say that a lot of people are asking it but the "important" event in question appears to have been under (or un) advertised the audience allegedly being mostly or all press ganged students. This is not quite the hordes of art fans we were told to expect.

So how exactly do semi-secret "art" events of questionable quality help to regenerate Thanet? I sat down and did a little maths*.

Thanet News Round Up

While I deal with a lot of personal "stuff" and am not in any real state to report here is a round up of what is going on in Thanet.

BBC News - Parents protest at Ramsgate children's home plan

Parents demonstrate against plans to turn offices in Kent into a residential children's home for up boys aged between 11 and 18.

The debate on TDC managing to web cast meetings (at last) takes an odd turn in which the printed media come in for a lashing from a Conservative Party councillor.

BIGNEWS MARGATE: No apology for Tory Boy Simon Moore suggest you try Thanet Times

Just your everyday reporting and commenting on the news from Tony sees (TDC Councillor) Simon Moores accuse Thanet Gazette or the Thanet Times of being factually unreliable.
